List of Things I Learned in College: How to do research, how to ace a final, how to pose properly for pictures. With graduation done and my first day at my job is finished, I can finally process these crazy four years. When I showed up to UCI I was a scared teenager who had no idea if he was cut out for college. Looking at tiny Blues Clues Blake (courtesy of my parents) I think I figured out what it was all for: to help families and give their kids the opportunity to live fulfilling, amazing lives through any means – UCI taught me that improving the outcomes of these families and their loved ones who face disease, maltreatment and adversity is what I was put on earth to do. The friends and mentors I’ve met along the way were an irreplaceable part of that; it was some of the hardest times I’ve ever had, but I’d gladly do it all over again. Because somewhere in that scared eighteen year old was a dreamer who desperately wanted to be a scientist even if it killed him. Thanks for the four years. I won’t let anyone down. #uci #graduation #college

This is going to be hard, but recent events brought this to the surface and I can’t start a business advocating for mental health without addressing my own struggle. Close friends know I’m extremely sensitive about my weight. Those who’ve known me for years know it’s something I forbid anyone from talking about. The “before” picture is relatively recent, and it’s one that set me on a path to change. I lost 30-40 pounds in an extremely short amount of time. I wish I could tell you I did this in a healthy way. But embarking on this change without addressing my body image issues set me up for disaster. I would go days without eating and spend hours at the gym. I’d decline dinners with friends to avoid food. I thought about calories constantly. I restricted. I fainted a lot. “Wear coats even in summer, it’ll hide your body.” “No food until you’ve run today.” “Put that down, fat kids don’t get donuts.” Even at this healthy weight I’m at, I still put utensils down “because fat kids don’t get to eat that…” Yesterday, I made the decision to begin treatment with a psychotherapist for disordered eating. I realize that my behaviors are worrying the people closest to me, I can’t mask my eating habits as quirky dieting anymore. I need help. Don’t get me wrong, losing weight has benefited my health in certain ways- but how I did it set me on a dangerous path. To those of you who can relate, know you’re not alone. I know what it’s like to wake up and hope today is the day you feel okay with yourself. I know what it’s like to cry at the dinner table because a plate of food has such horrible power over you. You are more than a number on a scale. Your weight does not define the successes you’ve had. And I must say this: men have body image issues that deserve to be addressed, and there’s no shame in that. With the many critics we encounter, no one should have to bargain with themselves for acceptance. Please know that you with similar struggles can always reach out to me to talk. It’s going to be a rough time, but I have an amazing support system and I’d like to help others in a similar spot. Thanks for reading. ❤️ #bodypositive #fitness #mentalhealthawareness
